WTF is indie anyway?

Certain people said it’s a genre, well others said it was an independent movement towards the creativity of the music itself which never being control by the major labels because major label sucks and being control by the mainstream market. Indie also not necessarily in the principle of music, but it also in the form of other art, such as poetry,painting,movie,manga,zine and among others and at certain point, we have people selling cloth which being called indie clothing line.
We have a lot of indie here and there in Malaysia, so back to the main issue: WTF is indie anyway?
First and foremost of all, I shall be talking bout independent movement. Now, please clear all ur head n let ur mind be free. Left all the emptiness and all the crap bout indie that u hear from ur shithead friend.
Let me tell u one thing, to know about indie and all these stuff u have to experience it. Hey..Im not saying im the pro in here but im just gonna give u guys a brief explaination bout these indie movement. So do u guys think u guys have experience it enough by just listening to our favourite indie local band?by going to any of the indie gig? Buying all these indie EP/shirt?

But do u know that independent movement is not just related to music, I wonder have u been to any indie movie festival@pre-show,? have u guys been to free indie theater?(do u guys watch theater anyway? hehe), indie designer maybe? have u guys ever read all kinds of blog and zine? Been into NGO such as MERCY,food not bombs? wohoooooo…and a lots more indie event and stuff that been held….as long as indie la ye tak? Well, I cant cover it all but let me cover the independent music movement.

Ahh yes, but you forgot that in indie culture, there will always be hipsters, posers and wannabes about. Thing with Malaysia is that indie is a new fad, which is automatically a death sentence because fads always equate to mainstream which kills true indie culture for what its worth.
But yeah, indie music (not just the ones in Malaysia), gigs, plays and movies (especially movies). I subscribe to them. Just not so much on clothing and all the movements because I don’t believe in them, after all, clothing doesn’t make you indie, going against the commercialised mainstream market does.

yup edrei.. i get ur point there. hipsters and posers will always be a thing in this indie culture. well my article is dedicated towards them for a better understanding of certain term which bother these kids nowadays. i couldnt barely bash these kids, so its better for me to write it down. at least they know something.cheers

Ni istilah baru. Dulu suma UG (Underground) dengan Konsep DIY (Do It Yourself) dalam kehidupan.
Indie ni lebih kepada konsep music. Indie-Rock pada asalnya.
Bila sekarang ni suma dah “indie”. so, semuanya UG n DIY jadi “indie” la..

ini yg aku dok slalu explain kat member2. indie is not a genre but it was a shotform for “indiependent”. masa hujan baru2 meletup dlu, kita slalu sebut band indie. ni betul, sebab kebanyakan band adalah bergerak secara indiependent. tp skang, dah ada plak kata, “diorg main muzik indie”. wtf?! what indie music is like anyway? hey .. muzik byk genre. kita dgr sndri dan kita bleh describe kan muzik dia. just say it. pop! alternative! punk! symphony! metal! etc etc. terlalu byk genre yg kita bleh kategorikan. but not indie ok?! so, aku harap takde lagi geng2 kat sana salah faham ttg ni. aku bukan emo. tp aku bg tau perkara yg aku fikirkan betul.

indie tu bukan genre…bgi aku band yg bergelar indie ni ialah band yg teda recording label..smua yg drng wat guna duit sndiri..dari demo hingga la ke album smua menggunakan duit,peralatan dan studio mereka sndiri…dats wat indie 4 me…klu dikatakan genre tidak boleh kerana genre adala gaya band tersebut dan jenis lagu yg mereka bwa…itu la kerana klu ada gig2 indie yg dianjurkan band2 indie dari genre hardcore metal alternative punk rock garage rock pop soda dn sbgnya diundang ini kerana band2 yg diundang kat gig tu teda recording label…fikir2kan apa ka indie sbnrya…peace…

erm…i dont know much about music, probably less than less…
to me..indie it just a label,for musician thats not under major labels…to me ALL musician is indie, where the point they start to begin in this industry…they are fighting for their idea, although the path not the same, some get pretty lucky and some not…and thats really the matter FIGHTING for the idea in music, film or anything…
indie/emo is mostly ‘join’ (if it can be join) by rebels…they want to stand out..wanna be uniqe…they wanna be heard…anyone have their own voice, their voice/idea not the same…some indie film i found portrait wrong/misguided msg..and thats worrying
i have a question…can an indie band become mainstream??what happen if they do??do ppl stop supporting them??

indie,da semakin berkembang di malaysia syabas n tahniah kpd semua yg saport,,tp kite jgn lupa kt aliran muzik2 lain,tanpa dorg industri muzik kita x meriah,BANGUNKAN MUZIK MALAYSIA, KLU BOLEH SAMPAI KE LUAR MALAYSIA,,peach,,,,,.
